What is FSSAI License?
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issues food licenses and registrations to all Food Business Operators (FBOs) under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. Operating any food business without FSSAI registration is an offence punishable with fine up to ₹5 lakh. All food delivery platforms (Zomato, Swiggy, Amazon Fresh, Blinkit) require FSSAI license number for listing.

FSSAI Application Process — FoSCoS Portal
- Determine type: Basic, State or Central based on turnover and operations
- Apply on FoSCoS: foscos.fssai.gov.in — create account and submit form
- Upload documents: PAN, Aadhaar, photo, address proof, food category list
- Pay fee: Online payment on portal
- Inspection: State/Central license may require physical inspection
- License issued: 14-digit license number issued digitally
Food Categories and Product Approvals
When applying for FSSAI license, you need to specify which food categories you operate in. Broad categories include: dairy, fruits & vegetables, meat & poultry, fish & seafood, edible oils, bakery, beverages, packaged food, health supplements and restaurant meals.
FSSAI Display Requirements
Once licensed, display FSSAI license number at your premises and on all product packaging. For online platforms, provide FSSAI number during listing. Non-display is also an offence with penalties.
